Pre-Conference Remarks by Barbara Kolm, Member of the Austrian National Council.

Summary

As Europe faces economic slowdown and over-regulation, a crucial question arises: where can growth be found? This article explores why a strategic rapprochement with the Americas, based on economic freedom and innovation, could be the key to sustainable renewal.

A New Alliance: Why the Americas Matter for the Future of Europe

As Europe faces mounting economic challenges, from sluggish growth and demographic decline to excessive regulation and fiscal pressures, it is time to rethink its strategic partnerships. The future prosperity of Europe depends not on greater centralization and bureaucracy, but on stronger alliances with those regions that continue to embrace entrepreneurship, innovation, and economic freedom. In this regard, the Americas are natural partners.

The relationship between Europe and the Americas is founded on more than geography or history. It is rooted in a shared civilizational heritage that values private property, individual liberty, the rule of law, and free enterprise. These principles have generated unprecedented prosperity on both sides of the Atlantic and remain the foundation of long-term economic success.

From an Austrian School of Economics perspective, prosperity cannot be planned from above. Wealth is created by millions of individuals making decisions in free markets. Entrepreneurs, investors, and consumers—not politicians and bureaucracies—drive innovation and economic progress. Yet Europe has increasingly burdened itself with regulations that limit competitiveness and discourage investment. Many countries in the Americas, by contrast, are rediscovering the importance of market-oriented reforms, fiscal discipline, and economic openness.

A renewed transatlantic alliance should therefore focus on expanding trade, reducing barriers to investment, and strengthening economic cooperation. Free trade is not a concession but a mutually beneficial exchange that allows individuals and businesses to specialize, innovate, and prosper. Greater economic integration between Europe and the Americas would enhance resilience, diversify supply chains, and create new opportunities for growth.

At the same time, Europe should recognize that political freedom and economic freedom are inseparable. A society that trusts its citizens and entrepreneurs will be more dynamic, innovative, and prosperous than one that relies on centralized control. The Americas offer numerous examples of the transformative power of market reforms and the opportunities that emerge when governments remove obstacles rather than create them.

The choice facing Europe is clear. It can continue down a path of overregulation, stagnation, and dependency, or it can embrace a future based on freedom, responsibility, and open markets. By strengthening its partnership with the Americas, Europe can reaffirm the values that made the West prosperous and secure.

The future belongs not to larger bureaucracies, but to freer societies. A new alliance between Europe and the Americas can help ensure that both remain engines of liberty, innovation, and prosperity for generations to come.
