The Patriots for Europe Foundation brings together influential voices, content creators and political leaders in Brussels for an afternoon dedicated to freedom of speech, digital censorship and the future of public debate.
Free Speech Marathon – Who Decides Which Voices Are Heard?
Freedom of speech is not a privilege granted by institutions. It is the condition that makes every other democratic freedom possible. The right to question official positions, to dissent from prevailing opinion and to bring uncomfortable issues into public debate is what distinguishes a living democracy from a managed one. Europe's nations built their political traditions on this principle, and its preservation can never be taken for granted.
Today, the question is no longer only whether citizens may speak, but who decides which voices are heard. A growing share of political debate now takes place on digital platforms, where decisions on visibility, moderation and access are taken by a small number of companies operating within an expanding framework of European regulation. These rules are presented as instruments to protect users, yet their consequences for open debate deserve serious scrutiny. Should these decisions rest with citizens and their elected representatives, or with platforms and regulators operating with limited accountability? Where does legitimate concern end and the narrowing of acceptable opinion begin, and who is responsible for drawing that line?
