Rising the challenge of Artificial Intelligence in Europe
Introduction by Mathilde ANDROUËT Member of the European Parliament from the Patriots for Europe group
Not a single day goes by without a media outlet discussing artificial intelligence as a revolution disrupting our daily lives and promising miracles for humanity’s future. Health, education, the economy, technology, defense… Every aspect of our everyday life and, more broadly, of society as a whole, is affected by the advantages offered by AI. Nowadays, there is no better example than ChatGPT to illustrate the extremely rapid progress of this set of technologies aiming to repro-duce human cognitive abilities. The impact of AI, which provides decision-making autonomy in our personal and professional lives, will undoubtedly be fundamental in the long term. Indeed, it will even usher in a paradigm shift characterized by the interaction between humans and machines, within a logic of complementarity. The main goal is to develop an empowering form of complementarity, with the clear understanding that certain relationships are undesirable, for example, obeying an AI’s orders, losing con-trol over processes, or delegating decisions to the machine.
AI can be deployed for the better but also for the worse, thus generating numerous concerns, particularly ethical ones, not to mention educational and social aspects. It also raises the issue of the strong temptation, for those who govern us, to regulate and legislate these much-vaunted AI advances, sometimes with harmful consequences for indi-vidual freedoms.
In any case, AI is triggering an upheaval that our soci-eties must acknowledge in order not to be overtaken, but rather to guide its forward momentum. During this symposium, speakers will sometimes hold contradictory positions, and we will avoid a binary approach so as not to fall into the worn-out “for or against” trap. Instead, our debate will revolve around the recognition that AI is certainly a lever of power and, as such, represents an opportunity for our national and European destiny. Our objective: to be proactive and avoid being mere spectators in the face of the Sino-American juggernaut, while preserving the ethi-cal principles so dear to the millennia-old foundations of our civilization.
